Last Wednesday, April 02, Atty. Al Mayo Sandino C. Paglinawan of the Sadsad Tamesis Legal and Accountancy Firm (STLAF) was invited as a speaker to the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Faculty of Arts and Letters’ career talk, “Career Start!”, hosted by the Legal Management Society.
“Career Start!” aimed to illuminate insights, advice, and real-life work experiences from a seasoned lawyer like Paglinawan and his co-speaker, Mr. Alphonse D. Estacio, to prospective law students.
In his presentation entitled “So You Took Legal Management… Now What?: Exploring Your Career Paths & Opportunities”, Paglinawan discussed the advantages of a degree in Legal Management and how it equips prospective law and business students with the skills needed to further their professional endeavors.

An AB Legal Management graduate from the UST Class of 2013 himself, Paglinawan shared his journey from Legal Management to law school to his first legal job, discussing the expectations and realities of work life in the legal industry.
“The journey is tough and but incredibly fulfilling,” said Paglinawan. “Your Legal Management background will make law school and the profession more manageable.”
He discussed the key skills a Legal Management student already has that prepare them for law school and the legal practice, highlighting how important it is to leverage such skills in pursuing law school and seeking job and career opportunities as a graduate.
“It’s not about being the smartest, it’s about being the most persistent,” Paglinawan implored, giving aspiring lawyers a survival guide to starting and furthering their careers.
The path to becoming a full-fledged lawyer is one filled with challenges, he acknowledged—from heavy workload, sleepless nights, and intense recitations and exams, to pressure from expectations and competition. But speaking from his experiences, it’s all worth it because law is a meaningful career that enables people to advocate for those who cannot fight for themselves, serve justice and make a difference in society, uplift communities, influence change, and protect people’s rights.
“Your future starts today. Whether you pursue law or another path, let your work be guided by integrity, excellence, and the desire to make a difference.”
